The University of Georgia is proud to welcome hundreds of International Scholars onto its campus each year. Last year, over 450 scholars made the decision to further their academic careers through participating postdoctoral experiences and research projects across a diverse selection of concentrations offered at UGA. Immigration Services serves as the critical liaison between faculty and scholars as they begin the process of hiring international scholars or inviting them to visit for the purpose of research collaboration.

In this episode of Discussions Without Borders, our host Linnea Tighe breaks down the immigration process for incoming scholars with Sylvia Schell, Assistant Director of Immigration Services. Sylvia calls on her experience working with our featured faculty and scholar, Professor Donglin Zhang and Junhua Huang. Sylvia Schell is a former winner of the International Education award and has worked with Immigration services for over a decade.

We hear from Professor Donglin Zhang of the Horticulture department in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Science share about his global career in ornamental plant breeding, and how international diversity and biodiversity are related to one another. Read Professor Zhang’s feature in a story about locally grown tea by the Office of Research.

Last, we take a look back at Junhua’s experience as a former scholar in the Woody Plant Science Lab. Junhua was enamored by the plentiful magnolias found in Athens and conducted research on the these trees. While she visited UGA’s campus, she took over 1,000 photos of flowers and plants.

Linnea Tighe of Immigration Services is the host of Discussion Without Borders. Linnea holds over 10 years of immigration policy experience and is passionate about working with students, scholars, and faculty to achieve their goals in academia and beyond.
