Welcome and welcome back, students!
As the new academic year unfolds, we at the Office of Global Engagement look forward to helping you add an international dimension to your studies here in Athens.
To our new arrivals, a heartfelt welcome! Your time here at UGA is more than an education; it’s a journey of growth and the crossing of borders. Our office is committed to providing you with top-notch support as you explore the opportunities to expand your global horizons at UGA and consider studying abroad on one of the many programs we offer.
Last year, over 3100 UGA students studied abroad, most of them on programs led by outstanding UGA faculty. Students studied in 88 different countries, including South Korea, Belize, Germany, Tanzania, Australia, Spain, South Africa, Brazil and of course, in Oxford, England and Cortona, Italy, at UGA’s own international residential centers.
UGA offers well over 100 study abroad programs ranging in length from one week to a whole year, for every major, in practically every corner of the world. You can also pursue independent research experiences and internships in other countries. And you do not have to worry about losing a semester when going abroad, as we make every effort to guide you to programs with courses that will count towards your degree program.
While you are considering a program, make sure you also look for financial support available to you, like the Passport Initiative, which covers the cost of first adult passports for UGA students. It is one of many generous scholarships we offer in support of study abroad. Our office awarded $1.2 million in scholarships last year. And don’t forget, HOPE and Zell Miller scholarships can be applied to all UGA approved study abroad programs.
To be a student at the University of Georgia means to engage with the world, an engagement that will give you the chance to gain critical academic and professional skills and demonstrate personal growth. Your willingness to step beyond your comfort zone shows courage and curiosity, and gives evidence of your resilience, all traits highly valued by future employers and graduate school admission offices. Study abroad is not a trip. It is part of your development as a student.
I wish you an exciting, inspiring semester, and I hope you will begin the next chapter of your journey at the University of Georgia with us here at the Office of Global Engagement.
