Global Education advisor Alyssa Johnson talks to open house participants

ATHENS, Ga. — On Saturday, Aug. 17, 2019, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., hundreds of students and parents interested in study, intern, research and other experiences outside of the UGA campus attended the 9th annual University of Georgia Global Open House at the Office of Global Engagement.

The Open House covered frequently asked questions, UGA’s diverse program offerings, and scholarship and financial aid information. Attendees had the opportunity to speak with returned students and advisors, and “picture themselves abroad” in a free photo booth.

“What a great opportunity for our offices to speak directly to incoming UGA freshman and their parents about the benefits of study abroad,” said Lacey Runge, Program Specialist for International Business Programs at the Terry College of Business. “This was an excellent chance to answer important questions that parents may have well in advance of their student studying abroad, and I think it will help remove barriers that our students may face when choosing to complete an international experience during their undergraduate careers. The earlier we can expose our students and their families to the international education opportunities that we offer the better.”

Incoming students and parents were able to learn about over 100 programs in more than 60 countries that are offered by UGA, and designed to accommodate students’ academic interests and educational goals. UGA programs range in duration from one to 52 weeks and allow students to earn UGA or transfer credit while studying abroad. “The open house is a great way for students of all years to get a glimpse at what study abroad programs they want to pursue,” says Caitlyn Pallas, member of UGA’s class of 2021.

Over 2,700 UGA students studied abroad in 2017-2018, and many qualify for scholarships and financial aid from the university, their academic departments, specific programs, and through regional and national scholarship programs. The Office of Global Engagement gives out more than $450,000 in scholarships every year and additional scholarship funds are available across the university.

Dr. Yana Cornish, the Director of Global Education at the Office of Global Engagement, remarked, “It was wonderful to see so many First Year students and their parents in attendance at the Study Away Open House! They were all so eager to learn about UGA academic opportunities beyond our lovely campus. I look forward to seeing many of them at our upcoming events and advising sessions.”
