ATHENS, Ga.—The Office of Global Engagement, as a division of the University of Georgia, was recently selected to receive a grant as part of the U.S. Department of State’s 2019 Capacity Building Program for U.S. Study Abroad. The University of Georgia, along with 20 other colleges and universities, was selected from over 120 applications to create, expand, and diversify American student mobility overseas in support of foreign policy goals. The Capacity Building Program for U.S. Study Abroad is a program of the U.S. State Department with funding provided by the U.S. Government and supported in its implementation by World Learning.

In addition to this original grant to explore ways to make study abroad experiences more accessible to diverse students, World Learning is also implementing a number of free initiatives, via workshops and webinars, for the study abroad community at large with the goal of increasing knowledge, encouraging networking amongst peers and providing resources.

The University of Georgia was one of five US institutions chosen to create and present one of these workshops for all personnel involved in or interested in study abroad opportunities for U.S. students. UGA partnered with the USG International Education office and colleagues at Savannah State University, Middle Georgia State University, and Georgia State University, and designed a workshop entitled, Faculty-led Study Abroad Best Practices: Addressing Grand Challenges in Faculty-led Study Abroad. This free workshop will be offered on February 28, 2020.

Yana Cornish, Director of Global Education, stated, “This project is a great opportunity for several Georgia schools and the USG International Education Office to collaborate in showcasing best practices we’ve developed in faculty-led study abroad programs.  I look forward to hosting the workshop on the UGA campus!” This free workshop will be offered on February 28, 2020.
